About the book

Dear Parent is a short, plainspoken guide to the parent-athlete relationship written entirely by the athlete: a teenage club volleyball player, addressing parents directly from inside the passenger seat, the sideline, and the ordinary moments most parents never get to see from his side of them.

Praise from parents

“Every kid deserves someone who’s fully in their corner, exactly as they are. Dear Parent shows parents how to be that person — it’s the book I hand to every family raising a young athlete.”
John Schneider, Dad
President of Football Operations / General Manager, Seattle Seahawks
“Reading Dear Parent took me right back to my days as a youth athlete in the gym. It’s an honest depiction of truly useful ways for parents to handle all the nuances of their young athlete’s journey. A straightforward read with tangible tools you can implement right away. Way to get it right, Grayson!”
Carli Lloyd, Mom
Team USA Olympic Medalist, 2016
“My dad used to drive me to practice in an old station wagon, and the ride home was a really important part of our relationship. Grayson has captured exactly what my dad was doing, and it’s the same thing I hope to give my own daughters. I’ve spent my whole career watching what it takes for a young player to develop, and it goes well beyond talent. This book gets at the part that matters most. It’s a game changer for parents in youth sports, and I’m thrilled Grayson has brought it into the world.”
Oliver Marmol, Dad
Manager, St. Louis Cardinals
“Honest. Overdue. Necessary. That’s the best way I can describe what Grayson put together here. How we parent young athletes is foundational to the way we’ll have relationship with them as adults. This book shows you how to bring the best out of your kid, and your relationship with them.”
Greg Olsen, Dad
3x Pro Bowl NFL tight end, co-founder of Youth Inc.
“There isn’t anything else like this on the shelf. As a parent of three daughters, this book is the clearest answer I’ve found to navigating youth sports today. Grayson wrote the book every parent in the stands needed and didn’t even know to ask for.”
Alisha Childress, Mom
Olympic Medalist, 2016, and Head Coach, MLV LA
“As Grayson’s first club coach, I watched a lot of this book happen in real time, one practice and one tournament at a time. What he gets right here about what a young athlete actually needs from the adults around him is rare, and it’s worth every parent’s time. I certainly wish I had this perspective when my daughter and I were on the same journey!”
Carl Henkel, Dad

About Grayson

Grayson Gervais is eighteen years old and grew up in Southern California. Volleyball has been part of his life for six years, following seven years in TaeKwonDo. As he says throughout these pages, sport takes up a lot of his life, but it isn’t close to the whole of it.

Dear Parent was born out of everything that surrounded the sport rather than the sport itself: the drive home, the seasons that didn’t go as expected, how he navigated challenges, and the people who loved him best, sometimes missing the moment and sometimes meeting it exactly right.

He wrote these pages as a high school senior at Chadwick School while living at home. This is his first book.
